The highest concentration in the body of DHA (docosahexaenoic acid), is on the retina. DHA concentrations play an important role in nerve cell layer of the retina. 

Why is this so important molecule in the retina? 

The presence of DHA in the retina increases the development of photo receptors necessary for vision, which in high concentrations causes the pigment in photoreceptor cells respond best when the eye faces vision in low light and at night. Interestingly, in patients with advanced AMD, increased consumption of marine omega-3 was associated with a lower risk of disease, but only when the intake of omega-6 vegetable oils or was low. People with consumption of vegetable oil or linoleic acid (an omega-6) higher, were more likely to develop AMD.

These observations were also confirmed in patients with early and intermediate stages of the disease. People with a high intake of fish and low consumption of linoleic acid had significantly slower disease progression than patients who consumed large amounts of vegetable oils and processed baked goods.
